SD HS Hoops Head Coach openings

Postby SBruce65 » April 5th, 2018, 9:24 pm

Looking like Madison will be hiring a new BBB coach. Wonder who is in the wings or even if alum Chad White, currently coaching at Pipestone may be interested. Happy for Coach Ricke on his new position.

I would imagine that this would be a pretty popular job opening!! What a run of 14 years for coach Michael Ricke that includes 7 state championship appearances, and 5 state titles. Congratulations to him on his new position, I assume that this means he will be making the hire for Madison's next head coach ?

Britton-Hecla is also open. Just like to keep track somewhere, would love to know who else is looking in SD.

I think Madison would like to have Chad White back in Maroon and Gold. But there are 2 problems, 1) Moving Chad White in means moving the current HS gym teacher out. It puts Madison in a squeeze when the HS gym teacher is not coaching, but he would lawyer up fast if they tried to push him out. 2) MN pays more than SD--even subtracting MN's high income tax, Chad comes out ahead in Pipestone. I'm guessing they promote from inside, or Huska takes over.

My guess for the Watertown job is they hire someone from outside of the district. Can't see them promoting anyone from within.

I agree with that assessment.

Maybe. But they have some very good grads from college programs in town. Tom Nielsen, Mitch White, Brady Wiebe. I'd see if Brady was interested.

As a past coach, I would think it would be an easier adjustment for someone with no connection to the system. I'm not really sure any assistant coach wants the head job (they surely could be in the mix though), and those other gentlemen might have established their careers already. A new guy has fewer "expectations" and starts from scratch. Very difficult to just move into a program that has had so much success ---- not every coaches' real dream job sometimes. All the mentioned possible coaches are certainly good athletes, but not always do the best athletes make for the happiest, most successful coaches. I'm sure they will make some good choices without our suggestions and we will just have to give that new coach a chance to develop his own program. All of this will take time and patience.

I have heard that the Lead-Deadwood Head Coaching position is open, the coach who is leaving only spent a year there.

Huron Boys job will be open with Coach Buddenhagen taking over the girls program. Pending the boards approval.

Interesting move by Coach Buddenhagen. Whoever gets the Huron boys job will have some talent to work with between Kobe Busch (2nd team AA All-State as a sophomore), both Evers boys and McGirr.

Is it possible that the Busch kid is leaving? Just really a head scratcher as to why switch programs unless something else is happening.

Does Buddenhagen have a daughter that might be a basketball player? Looks like a Buddenhagen (freshman) on the girls team this year.

Good luck to him!

Pending school board approval, Madison will hire Jeff Larsen as their head coach; Colman-Egan will be looking for a new head coach then.
