White River - Additon of Luke Wells

Postby coachwatch » December 5th, 2018, 11:02 am

White River seems to be loaded! Adding All Tourney Class A Luke Wells. Had 28 and 11 vs Tea last year playing for Crow Creek. Add him into that junior class along with Jadice Morrison. They are my favorite in Class B Hoops!

They have a chance at back to back titles. Lots of juniors for the Tigers.

Eldon continues to be the best recruiter in the state! Rumor has it he has about 9 kids living in his house that are on the boys and girls basketball teams.

What a shocker. Maybe this topic should be moved to Recruiting.

It is getting a bit ridiculous at this point. For years everyone has known that WR has recruited students to their school for basketball. But the state just decides to turn the other cheek. When is something going to be done? Obviously they are a great team without their yearly recruiting class, but it has gone too far at this point and needs to be taken care of.

There are some colleges that could use Eldon's recruiting skills.....

Honest question, where does White River all have kids playing from right now? White River and now Crow Creek, where else?

What do you mean "the state decides to turn the other cheek". Here is a rule from SDHSAA eligibility for open enrollment.

The privilege of transferring athletic eligibility as an SDHSAA athletic open enrollment student is granted only one time during a student’s high school career. Any subsequent transfers without a corresponding move by the parents will render the student ineligible for one year.

Any school in South Dakota is allowed to do this. Sorry if this is still an issue for some people after all these years that this has been going on.
Boom there goes the dynamite!!

Sorry, but very few public class B schools in SD seem to seek out kids for sporting purposes. Most of the communities across the state would like to see their own kids be successful and not bring in others for the sole purpose of sports. Have kids done this? Absolutely, but buy and large for most of the people across the state, this is frowned upon. If a kid or family moves schools solely for sports and continues to go to school there for the rest of their HS career, so be it. Some schools have been doing this for a long time, and like I said, it is largely frowned upon. WR is not the only school that has done this, but it is the most prevalent in boys basketball as it has been done for several years in a row....

Your key words "rumor has it". Besides, you know anyone on a class B AD salary who has a house that large? I know there's isn't.

I'm not aware of the circumstances behind Luke Wells transferring, but i am educated and mature enough not to make assumptions. However, I do know that the other 4 starters for White River on Dec. 7th, who won 71 - 47, have been in the White River school district all of their lives, as well as the sixth man.

Doesn't matter if it's one or ten players, open enrollment will always be debated. This year it seems the talk is about Wells and last year the discussion was about Carlson leaving Parker during FB season to play BB at Canistota. The SDHSAA should change the rule to have participants sit one year before they are eligible for HS extra-curricular activities. That would change some things.

Sounds like the White River girls teams has more recruits than the boys team. Link below to an article from the Rapid City Journal a while back.

The West River Tigers girls basketball squad makes Eldon look like chopped liver when it comes to amassing talent.

You know how cheap a house is in WR, probably a "buyers" market. The superintendent had a bunch of kids and the school provided the house + a Suburban, who's to say Mr. One and Done isn't on the same program? I just find it pretty darn amazing that good basketball players open enroll EVERY year. Shoot a couple of the girls recruits would only come if they were given a specific number and position. With that said, it won't matter when they head east of the river to play anyway. This is the exact reason HS coaches shouldn't be involved with AAU programs, if I'm a coach in that area I keep my kids very far away from Mr. One and Done!
