With a few of the teams finishing up on Monday and Tuesday, wanted to put out a preview of the Top 10 Class B teams for next year! Good luck to all of the teams this March. Should be a great couple of weeks.

1) White River (2018-2019 regular season record 17-2)- return 4 starters and only lose Jadice Morrison. They return top 7 or 8 or 9 of the top 10 players. They are loaded again at every position and will be the preseason favorite on most if not all polls

2) DeSmet (18-2) - They return 4 starters from their 18-2 team. Including Freshmen stud Kalen Garry. They will make noise

3) Dell Rapids St Mary (16-4) - Only top team to return all Five starters from their 16-4 team. They also return the leading scorer at 27 or 28 ppg in Class B hoops in Soph. Connor Libis. He will be the Preseason Player of the year for next year.

4) Viborg Hurley (18-2) - The lose Brodee Sherman but return a loaded Soph class including high flyer Chase Mason. Dunk City Baby!

5) Canistota - (13-6) Only Class B team to beat White River this year. They return a bunch including the Ortman brothers and high scoring Chase Merrill. No real height though. But they can score.

Sully Buttes: They lose Cameron Ogle but return their QB in Nick Wittler and Big Boy Jett Lamb

6) Corsica Stickney: HOF coach - they return a nice sophomore group led by Brendan Wentland.

7) Hanson - (16-4) They return junior guard Reggie Slaba and are well coached. Beat Parker this year playing some solid lock down D.

8) Aberdeen Christian: (13-6) They lose the Becker boys but return Andrew Rohrbach.

9) Warner: (16-4) Young team, shouldn't fall off much, will only improve.

10) Platte Geddes: (12-8 Class A) Welcome back to Class B. PG is well coached and bring back Soph 6'4 Kelby VanDerWerff.
Colman Egan: (13-7) Bring back 4 starters including leading big man 6'5 Dalton Voelker

Others in the running! Elkton Lake Benton (good core back, lost 4 seniors) , Howard (yes I said it all returning), Northwestern, Sanborn Central Woonsocket (Noah Dickson returns, watch out)

Good luck to all in the Class B tourney! Should be a great one this year!

Great list, but I would add Herreid/Selby Area. Good looking team this year with zero seniors on the roster. They beat Lemmon convincingly and even surprised Aberdeen Christian.

Howard boys improved their roster with the addition of Sam Aslesen from Elk Point Jefferson. His dad Travis was hired as the new Principal. Sam will be a junior and is a 6'4 solid player.

How does this preview look for White River with the losses of so many of the players? Will they still find enough talent before the start of the season to match up with the rest of the teams on this list?

White River will look different, but coached the same. The two Saylers (Nick & Joe) Eldon's son and one other name i am forgetting are still really solid. They also lost Jr. Colbe Scott to Canistota.

Not sure what your question is? But yes they will look different with the loss of Wells, Sazue, Sorace, & Ioyotte. (But Coach Marshall will coach them up.) But alot of transfers happen on the reservation and a few non reservations school as well. Keep an eye on Canistota, they seem to get a few new players each year. And the transfers they picked up this year will help.

Not sure why know one is mentioning Howard. They are a team to really keep an eye on. Brooks is tough & the kid from Elk Point along with the Spader boys are going to be a bad match up for just about everyone in Region 4? They will advance to the round of 16. Really difficult to gauge just how good they will be but for a team like St. Mary's or Hanson or anyone else in that region they will be a load for sure.

Coach mentioned Howard earlier in this thread as improving their roster with the addition of Aslesan.

The regular season gets kicked off this week with most teams opening up on Friday night. With that being said, there is no time like the present to examine the three classes in South Dakota. Here are the preseason rankings for teams in all three classes.

Class AA:
Let’s stick the defending champs at #1. New season (I know) however they return lots of experience and a solid PG in Jackson Hilton. Add Northern State commit and big man Gavin Terhark to the mix and Brandon Valley will be tough once again. SF O’Gorman checks in at #2. They are led by the D2 commitment combo fo Jack Cartwright (USF) and Akoi Akoi (Augustana). Another Northern State commit, Kobe Busch, leads Huron into the #3 spot alongside Teegan Evers and loads of upperclassmen. #4 is Yankton – they have some kids named Mors. Rounding out the top 5 is SF Roosevelt who again gets one year older and will have great guard play.

1 Brandon Valley
2 SF O'Gorman
3 Huron
5 Yankton

Class A:
The dominant reign of Tea may be over, however they found some more players and will be good. On paper, St. Thomas More looks like it could be a favorite. That being said, the top 5 or so teams are all loaded with talent and will have to battle all year long to get to the state tourney. St. Thomas More checks in as the preseason #1 team behind Ryder Kirsch (Black Hills State commit), Connor Hollenbeck and Ryan Wojcik. Dakota Valley at #2 will be solid again and may have the most talented kid in Class A – Paul Bruns. Sioux Falls Christians returns a bunch of talent once again and sits at #3. #4 to start the year is Dell Rapids who made a run into the state tourney last year and return a bunch plus a solid transfer big man. Sioux Valley is at #5 with the Dakota State commit duo of Max Nielson and Ryan Schuster.

Rank Team Record W's of Note L's of Note Last Week
1 St. Thomas More
2 Dakota Valley

Class B:
It will be a fun and exciting year in Class B as they talent level is high and lots of teams will be contending near the end of the season. The #1 team we tabbed to start is DeSmet. Lead by the super sophomore duo of Kalen Garry and Rhett Osthus, this team is ready to be a major factor for years to come – including this year. Viborg-Hurley returns a ton including Grant Mikkelsen as they check in at #2. Region 5 foe Canistota slides in just behind their rival at #3. Dell Rapids St Marys is the #4 team behind high scoring guard Connor Libis and company. Sully Buttes will be led once again by Nick Wittler as they round out the top 5.

Colbe Scott played with a kid or kids from Canistota on travelling team. I was told that he lives with a coach.

Wow. Just checked some rosters - Crow Creek has 3 seniors who were coached by White River's Eldon Marshall with two being starters last year and the third starting at times; Todd county now has 4 juniors and seniors who transferred from White River. I was surprised to see that Tyson Iyotte is on TC roster as he started the year in White River and ran cross country at state for White River.

I see that there are 5 boys teams scheduled for the Parkston classic on 12/30. Corsica Stickney, McCook Central Montrose, Mt Vernon Plankington, Sully Buttes and Viborg - Hurley. I wonder who has the scheduling error, or who doesn't have it on their schedule???
