Preview for Class B next year!

Postby coachwatch » March 17th, 2020, 10:11 am

Run down on Class B hoops for next year 2020-2021

DeSmet - Return almost everyone. Kalen Garry (Best Junior in the State) , Osthus, Holland as juniors. Cavanaugh & McCune as Seniors. Battle tested.

Viborg Hurley - Return a ton of incoming seniors, ton of athletes. Boomgarden & Chase Mason (Best overall athlete in the state) Can guard any team. Only saw Canistota really fight through them.

Canistota - Return everyone except Trey Ortman, Bring back the other Ortman, Scott, Merrill & crew. Ton of guards.

Platte Geddes - Bring back Kelby Vander Werff and Foxley down low both 6'5/6'4 bigs. Well coached!

White River - Bring back - Joe Sayler (Unless they move out) Dylan Marshall and coach Marshall. Hard to say on these guys always depends who moves in and out. 15 straight State Bs! Wow.

Dell Rapids St Mary - Under achieved this year. Not sure they were completely healthy either. But they bring back a good group of juniors now seniors in All State High scoring/shooting guard Connor Libis, Max Herber, Sam Palmer, Colin Winberg, Noah Dennis, Connar Kangas. If they find some toughness night in and night out they could be a favorite.

Elkton Lake Benton - Bring back a good group that qualified for the SoDak 16 in Harming brothers, Nibbe, & Erickson.

Lyman - Made some great strides this past season and will only get better under Cooper Garnos

Howard - Brings back everyone from a 16-5 team except for Sr. Jacob Brooks. Bring back Sam Asleason, Tyson Spader, and some good younger kids. Could make a lot of noise.

Aberdeen Christian - only loses two seniors but one is really good in Andrew Rohrbach so just not sure but they have some good young guys.

Hanson - Brings back a ton. Lose Reggie Slaba but return Ferry, Price, & Bauhmiller. Region 4B will be loaded again with DRSM, Howard, Hanson, & Elkton LB.

Arlington - Lose a good group of seniors but return Ryker Erstad and are well coached.

Probably missed some but this a good start. I'll add some stats when we see them. Class B will be loaded with talent and teams again next year!

My top 10 for next year:
1. DeSmet — the boys will be a year older and ready to prove they were the best in 2020. Juniors Kalen Garry, Rett Osthus, Tory Holland, and Colt Wilkinson. Seniors Cody Cavanaugh and Ethan McCune.
2. Viborg Hurley — Will have strongest senior class in B: Chase Mason, Braden Brandriet, Eli Boomgarden, Gradee Sherman, Grant Mikkelsem.
3. Platte Geddes — Frank Cutler has been one of the best coaches in the state for years. 6’5 senior Kelby VanDerWerff and senior guard Brody Boltjes will be teamed with 6’4 junior Caden Foxley.
4. Canistota — very strong perimeter play will continue next year with Chase Merrill and Tyce Ortman and Isaiah Robertson.
5. Marty — high scoring Xavier Hare is a strong all-State candidate and Torrey Bohannon will get plenty of votes also. Alex Cournoyer will give them a third scoring option.
6. Dell Rapids St Mary — plenty of support for presumptive all-State Connor Libis, Max Herber, Sam Palmer.
7. White River — best coach in B in Eldon Marshall. Dylan Marshall and Joe Sayler return.
8. Corsica Stickney — strong senior class: Brendan Wentland, Jaylen Kemp, Trever Burke.
9. Warner — Landon Leidholt is one of the best athletes in Class B as the all state football player tries to double up with an all-state award in basketball. Alex Braun is a worthy wing man.
10. Howard — graduate 2 seniors including 6’6 Jake Brooks but return: 6’5 Sam Aslesen, Tisyn Spader and 8th grader to be Luke Koepsell.
Honorable Mention:
Lyman — Tyson Floyd and Cruz Garnos
Gregory — has the best freshman to be that few have heard about: 6’5 Daniel Mitchell and Coy Determan.
Wessington Springs — have been irrelevant for several years until 2020 break through. 6’5 Jacob Messmer is the real deal. Dylan Schimke, Tyler Kole, and 6’5 Mason Schelske provide roster talent.
Hanson — graduating Reggie Slaba leaves a huge void. But 6’7 Hayden Bahmuller and Riley Ferry will be back.
Freeman Academy Marion — ditto the Wessington Springs comment about a 2020 breakthrough season. Quincy Blue is the real deal for FAM. Thslen Schroeder and Dylan Johansen support.
Ethan — graduate one excellent senior: Future Jacks baseball player Brady Hawkins. Eric Gustafson will lead the returnees.
Elkton Lake Benton — graduate Grant DeRuyter but standout Matthew Nibbe will be back, as well as Marcus Harming and Miles Harming.

Viborg Hurley lost to DeSmet, Sioux Valley, and Aberdeen Christian. Mitchell and Sioux Falls were not good to VH as they went 1-2 at Mitchell and 0-1 at Sioux Falls.

Viborg Hurley wasn't at full strength in any of their losses but that being said I watched the DeSmet game and the loss to Sioux Valley and they are both great teams Might have been same outcome. The Aberdeen Christian game i think they have won if Mason had played. Any thoughts on why tournament is still postponed not cancelled Could they maybe be thinking mid to late April if things level off? As a bb fan i would still be in favor of that

My thoughts:
De Smet – Obvious favorite – bring back entire starting lineup and was already the best team in the state this year.
Viborg-Hurley – Have the best athletes, probably, and in Class B that will win a lot of games.
Canistota – Going to miss Trey, but bring enough back to make another run at State.
Platte-Geddes – I would say their coaching will take them further than their talent, but they do have talent.
Howard – Sleeper Contender next year – will be interesting to see how much time they put in this offseason to improve.
White River – I mean, they should be good, but could be great if Marshall gets out and recruits well this offseason.
Dell Rapids St. Mary’s – Can they improve enough on the defense end to get through their Region and have a chance at State. They also need someone else besides Libis to score consistently.
Castlewood – Bring back 3 double digit scorers in Kerkvliet, Nielsen, and Kirwan and add in one of the best, if not the best, 8th grader in the state in Lane Tvedt. Them and De Smet are the favorites in their region.
Corsica-Stickney – Senior heavy group that usually bodes well for Class B.
Hanson – well coached team that will miss Slaba, but should be able to make a run in their region for the SoDak 16.
Wolsey-Wessington – Lose two seniors, that did a lot, but have good underclassmen and they play hard. Do they have enough scoring to compete in their Region with De Smet and Castlewood?

I’m sure I’m missing some teams too.. but I think De Smet is in a class of it’s own and everyone else is playing for 2nd at this point. Hopefully we get to find out next year!!

DeSmet and Viborg-Hurley are the two best teams in the state, This year and next... I'm not going to say that there aren't teams that couldn't steal a win here or there throughout the year against either team, when one team takes a night off, but buy and large they are hands down the best two teams. This year, there was sickness that plagued V-H all the way through the first round of the region tournament, that even got to the head coach. DeSmet has played solid and even all year, and only showed their weakness against Canistota in the class B ranks. To say that one was the best over another in the state all year is just a false statement. I believe if all things were equal, it would be a great seven game NBA style series between the two, and I wouldn't put money down either way.

I know that summer league basketball has absolutely no relevance in the regular season, but I personally watched VH beat DeSmet by 14 without Mason or Mikkelsen playing at all, with DeSmet's entire starting roster. VH was healthy and playing well at the time, thus making me think that I wouldn't give the crown to DeSmet just yet... Polls are just a popularity contest, not the actual tournament.

Everyone needs to have faith that we will still have a state tournament, the SDHSAA still does...

DeSmet and Viborg Hurley are my top 2 this year and my preseason top 2 next year. The last two seasons they have earned this on the court. DeSmet might have surprised some by making the championship game Last year. This season they were consistently excellent all year. Well coached, great defense, great team ball, not selfish, and a true star go to player in Kalen Garry. Viborg Hurley had illness issues throughout the season keeping them from consistently showing their best ball. But they have the best junior class in Class B. Very deep and talented with Gradee Sherman really stepping up while the stud athlete Chase Mason was not at full strength. If they played 7 games, I would say that a series like that would go 7 games with either team capable of winning that 7th game.
As for playing a state tournament this season: not going to happen ..... IMO.
