Grayshirt means they are interested in him but have no scholarship available. He will not enroll until January following his HS graduation. Since ones eligibility clock doesn't start ticking until he enrolls at the school it actually makes him a recruit for the following year. He will be able to go thru spring ball and then start the following fall with his 4 years to play. Most grayshirts do some class work at a Juco during that first semester when they cant be enrolled in college.

Never heard of it before, but here is how the Argus explained it today:

"Vandeberg will be classified as a grayshirt, meaning he’ll be a part-time student at Iowa or a nearby junior college for the first semester of his freshmen year and then join the team and become a scholarship player starting in Jan. 2014."
People want leadership. And in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone.

Grayshirting is becoming more popular in football because of the timing. It works best in football because football has their season during the first semester and then spring football in the second semester. Players don't attend school on campus because they are not receiving money for that first semester. They find a cheaper school so they can accumulate credits but not have to pay the huge costs (especially with out of state students). Players do not take a full credit load...usually 12 credits...at a JUCO or even on campus because that would start their eligibility status. Personally, unless you have your heart set on going to a school, grayshirting isn't beneficial to the player. I wouldn't recommend it to a player who has several other offers to play football elsewhere. All this goes out the window if the player has his heart set on going to this school. I'm sure Matt feels that Iowa is the best fit for him and this is the best route for him to play at Iowa.

So do they play an un-documente/un-affiliated role on the football team in the fall, or do they actually sit out a year?

They can have nothing to do with the team for the fall semester. They enroll in January for the spring semester and take part in spring ball.
