State A Legion Tourney

Postby CSDsportsfan1 » July 30th, 2018, 9:33 am

Looks like the 2018 State A Legion Tourney should be a good one as there are several teams that should be in the mix for the title.

You have to start the discussion with Rapid City Post 22. The Hardhats come into the tourney as the favorite but I don't get the sense this team is unbeatable despite their 50-10 record. First year head coach Kelvin Torve has done a nice job with this group as he had to replace a ton of experience from last year's team. Like most 22 teams, they have a strong pitching staff, and the move to 7-inning games will help them as they will not have to go as deep into their bullpen as past years.

After that, there are several teams that could make some noise and possibly put a scare into 22. Pierre comes in as the defending champion and has a deep pitching staff, headed by Augie commit Peyton Zabel. If they can put together some offense, Post 8 might be a tough out.

Renner has a ton of experience back from last year's team and should be considered one of the favorites with the leadership of Peyton Garbers and Nick Hoekstra.

Mitchell took some time to gel but has been playing very good ball since July 1. They have a solid pitching staff and a very good offense led by Drew Kitchens and Sam Michels.

Brandon Valley won the state high school title and comes into the tourney by beating SF East twice in the region championship. Look for Dayne Peyton, Isaiah Chevalier and crew to make it to the weekend.

Sioux Falls East has a lot of experience back from last year's team along with some young guns from last year's state champion Jr. Legion team. If this team gets on a roll behind Mitchell Tolk, Matt Hedeen, Austin Ruhland and Cyler Melvin, look out.

Brookings (10-20) and Yankton (17-24) round out the field. While you never want to count any team out, a good starting pitcher (like Jamesone Meyer from Brookings or Kiernan Lulleman from Yankton) can help an underdog win a game or two now that all tourney games are 7 innings.

First day of the state tourney went about as expected other than the miracle walk-off grand slam that Renner pulled out their hat to beat Sioux Falls East.

Thursday's games have Brandon vs Brookings and Sioux Falls East vs Yankton in elimination games. Look for Brandon and East to stay alive.

Winner's bracket games have Mitchell taking on RC Post 22 and Renner playing Pierre. Look for 22 to win but an upset by Mitchell is not out of the question. Pierre/Renner is a toss up.

Brookings and Yankton were eliminated on day 2 of the State A Legion tourney on Thursday in Pierre. SF East defeated Yankton 8-1 while Brandon Valley beat Brookings 11-0.

In winners bracket games, Rapid City Post 22 had a big 6th inning to break open a close game and mercy rule Mitchell 11-1. Renner used strong pitching to shut down Pierre 9-2.

So the schedule for day 3 will have SF East playing Mitchell at 1 pm. Pierre takes on Brandon Valley at 3:30 and Post 22 meets Renner in night game to see who will be the last undefeated team.

Congrats to Rapid on the State Championship!! Other than the tight, one run game with Renner, a dominate performance!! They just don't make mistakes and they EXPECT to win! Best of Luck in North Dakota!

Kudos to Pierre for an awesome tournament!

Congrats to Post 22 on winning another state championship.

So far, they have gone 1-1 at the Central Plains Region tourney in Dickinson, losing to Dubuque County, Iowa 8-2 on Wednesday and 10-running the host Dickinson team 16-3 on Thursday.

On Friday, they face a tough test in Millard West out of Omaha in an elimination game.
